Those who tuned into Arsenal’s 3-2 League Cup semi-final first-leg win over Chelsea on Wednesday night have claimed that Viktor Gyokeres ‘despises’ one of his high-profile teammates following one incident. The Gunners now have one foot in the final after a goal from their striker was sandwiched between strikes from Ben White and Martin Zubimendi.
As things stand, Arsenal are rated as the best football team in the world. As a result, they are among the favourites in every competition they remain in, having raced into a six-point lead in the Premier League and being tipped by many to win their first-ever Champions League title.
While the League Cup is the least prestigious competition they are contesting, Mikel Arteta is determined to add to his trophy collection. However, one issue that could yet derail those ambitions is a potential mismatch between two of his forward players.
Having scored just once in his previous 10 matches prior to Wednesday night’s victory, Gyokeres’ goal at Stamford Bridge could do wonders for his confidence. There have been several reasons suggested for his struggles to adapt to English football as quickly as Arsenal supporters might have hoped. While his experience and ability have often been criticised, it was clear to many in midweek that a lack of chemistry with Bukayo Saka may also be weighing him down.
During the build-up to his goal, Gyokeres appeared frustrated by Saka’s decision to cut the ball back to a teammate rather than cross into the box, where the striker was perfectly positioned for a simple finish. Instead, he had to wait for Ben White to provide the service his movement deserved
What was even more telling, according to Arsenal supporters, were the Swedish international’s actions during the celebrations. While the moment may have been blown out of proportion, many online couldn’t help but notice that he appeared to push Saka away as the winger tried to embrace him.
Gyokeres shouldn’t do that. That was so wrong,” one X user wrote, while another added: “Thought this was just agenda but the clip actually looks like that.” Elsewhere, a third remarked: “I missed this, but the more I see it the more upsetting it appears. If we are to win trophies, this needs fixing.”
A fourth continued: “Saka hates Gyokeres… I’m convinced,” as a fifth concluded: “People will say stop spreading drama but it’s clearly obvious he does push Saka away and Saka noticed. About time he vented his frustration. Saka does need to learn he can square it first time it’s a team game. They’ll laugh about this later.”
